Authors’ organisations in the UK ask government to establish a Creators Council

Luke AlcottNews, UK

Authors’ organisations in the UK have previously raised the need for a form of “Creators Council” to ensure that the Government includes authors and their representatives in making policy that affects them. Previously, similar calls had focused on the significance of the EU Copyright Directive for their industry. The most recent call from the sector focuses on the plight of creators during the Covid-19 pandemic. While the Government response in the UK has provided a generous range of income supports some critics noted that the structure of income support schemes would leave some specific types of workers without coverage likely to include a high number of creators. Signees of the letter include IAF members ALCS, the Design and Artists Copyright Society, the Society of Authors and the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain.
